Martin Meehan is originally from Manchester but now living in Armagh. He learnt music from Michael McGoldrick and Peter Carberry in Manchester and later he learnt to play the uilleann pipes at the Armagh Pipers Club. Martin currently teaches flute at the club and has recently released a solo flute CD entitled 'Three's Company'.
From the sleeve notes of the album:
“I first met Martin in 1984 and started teaching him the tin whistle at the music classes run by Cómhaltas Ceoltoirí Eireann. From back then to now he has been an inspiration to me and his flute playing has reached a standard only to be proud of. This album gives you a taste of what is to come from a talented musician; catch him wherever he is playing and hear it for yourself.” - Mike McGoldrick
“What first hits you about Martin Meehan's playing is the seemingly effortless flow of the music. He always produces a big full sound and this coupled with a rare musical imagination makes compelling listening. Martin makes every tune his own and it is this ability to, as it were, recompose a tune each time round that defines the essence of traditional music.
After his family moved to Armagh, Martin joined the Armagh Piper's Club where he took up the uilleann pipes. These days he is a valuable member of the teaching staff in the club tutoring 2 flute classes.
This CD will establish Martin as a major force in the world of flute playing and I know that this CD will play and play and give endless delight and inspiration to all who hear it.” - Brian Vallely
